Airlangga Hartarto has one foot in the business sector, as owner of fertilizer distributor PT Graha Curah Niaga and president commissioner of at least two private companies, PT Ciptadna Asset Management and PT Fajar Surya Wisesa Tbk. His other foot is in politics, where he is a deputy chairman of Golkar Party and one of its legislators in the House of Representatives.
The holder of two master's degrees, one in business administration from Monash University and another in management technology from the Melbourne Business School, Airlangga, now 54, was already active in organizations in his student days at the technology department of Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta.
The youngest son of former Industry Minister Hartarto, he began his political career as Golkar deputy treasurer in 2004 and became a lawmaker of the party in 2009. An admirer of Mahatma Gandhi, Airlangga is also active in a number of organizations such as the Association of Indonesian Listed Companies (AEI) and the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AEFO.)
