Makassar Reclamation Project Contested

Environmental watchdog WALHI is challenging in court a permit issued by the South Sulawesi governor for reclamation works on the western coast of Makassar in December. It argues that the permit should have been contained in a regional regulation on coastal zoning and should have the legal approval of the maritime and fishery ministry as well as the environment ministry. An environmental impact study on the project had also never been completed and published. The permit allows a private company to reclaim 157 hectares of sea in the CPI Area of western Makassar, 57 hectares of which will be handed over to the government for the construction of a state guesthouse.
