The Ministry of Industry recognizes the significant role of the younger generation in accelerating the transformation toward an inclusive and sustainable green industry. Realizing a green industry is not merely a matter of technology and regulations, but also requires the active role of youth as catalysts for change.

“Therefore, through the AIGIS Goes to Campus program, we actively collaborate with academia, especially university students. The younger generation is not just symbolically invited to participate but positioned as key drivers in the transition toward a low-carbon industry,” said Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in his statement in Jakarta, Wednesday (30/7).

The Minister added that his ministry has prepared various strategies to open green job opportunities relevant to Indonesia’s young talent. Industrial training centers and vocational schools under the Ministry continue to develop curricula based on green competencies, such as energy efficiency, low-carbon technologies, and recycling practices.

In addition, the Startup4Industry program has also become one of the Ministry’s flagship initiatives to support young entrepreneurs in sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and the circular economy. “Through this program, we encourage collaboration between tech startups and small and medium industries (IKM), and pave the way for them to enter the supply chains of larger industries,” Agus explained.

Furthermore, to strengthen the sustainability ecosystem, the Ministry also promotes cross-sector collaboration through three main pillars: inclusive policy, innovative ecosystems, and active youth participation. “These pillars form the foundation for the Ministry to develop environmentally friendly regulations, build cooperation with universities as incubators of sustainability ideas, and engage youth as strategic partners,” he added.

Agus outlined concrete steps taken by the Ministry to accelerate green technology adoption in the industrial sector. “We are currently developing a decarbonization roadmap for nine priority industrial sectors and establishing the Green Industry Service Company (GISCO), which connects industrial players with green financing and technological services,” he said.

Through events such as the Annual Indonesia Green Industry Summit (AIGIS) and the Green Industry Forum, the Ministry brings together government, industry players, academics, and communities to share best practices and strengthen the green industry ecosystem.

The Minister emphasized that the government does not overlook remote communities when implementing green industry policies. The Ministry continues to encourage the development of green industries based on local potential, provide training and appropriate technology for IKM, and transform regional service units into Public Service Agencies (BLU) that are more responsive to local needs.

Meanwhile, in terms of digital technology utilization, the Ministry actively promotes the use of the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and big data for energy efficiency and emissions reduction. The National Industrial Information System (SIINas) has also been developed to digitally monitor greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions.

“Our hope is for AIGIS to become an integrated platform that drives green industry transformation in Indonesia. Collaboration among government, academia, industry players, media, and the younger generation is crucial to realizing an inclusive and globally competitive green future,” said the Minister.

Green Jobs

At the AIGIS Youth Green Forum carrying the theme “Future Green Begins,” Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry, Eko S.A. Cahyanto, representing the Minister, stated that the Ministry is intensifying engagement with academic communities as a strategic step to foster emotional and intellectual ties in efforts to develop and strengthen the national industrial sector. This step is part of efforts to build an inclusive and sustainable industrial ecosystem while preparing the younger generation to become the driving force of Indonesia’s future industry.

“The implementation of the green industry will naturally give rise to new business processes that require technological support and human resources. We already have a concept for developing green industry talents, which also needs to be aligned by academic institutions for example, through curriculum adjustments so that innovations and new systems will emerge to support green industry implementation,” he said.

A similar view was expressed by Vice President Director of PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), Bob Azam, who stated that the green jobs trend in Indonesia is expected to continue growing in line with increasing awareness among industrial players about the importance of implementing green and sustainable industry principles. As a form of commitment to the green industry transition, PT TMMIN has established a Capability Center to serve as a hub for developing human resource competencies in the green industry field.

“Industry awareness of the importance of sustainability is increasing. Therefore, the demand for workers with expertise in the green industry continues to rise,” said Bob.

Head of the Industrial Services Policy and Standardization Agency (BSKJI) of the Ministry of Industry, Andi Rizaldi, stated that AIGIS Goes to Campus is part of strengthening the national industrial transition agenda toward sustainability and low carbon emissions. This program serves as a pre-event to The 2nd Annual Indonesia Green Industry Summit (AIGIS) 2025.

“This program is designed to broaden the network of ideas and contributions from the younger generation in developing the green industry in Indonesia,” Andi explained.

The series of activities under AIGIS Goes to Campus includes talk shows at four prominent universities (Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Padjadjaran, Universitas Trisakti, and Universitas Bina Nusantara), the AIGIS Green Scientific Competition innovation contest at five campuses, and the Youth Green Forum as the highlight event, providing a dialogue space between students and the Minister of Industry.

The Youth Green Forum was attended by over 200 participants, including student and faculty representatives from participating campuses, speakers, main sponsor PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), and green industry stakeholders.

On this occasion, the Minister also presented awards to the five best works from the AIGIS Green Scientific Competition, which were deemed to have strong potential to support the development of environmentally friendly industries. The awardees were UI, Unpad, Trisakti, Binus, and Politeknik STTT Bandung, along with the best participant of Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) 2024 from SMA N Bali Mandara.

“This competition is not just a contest, but a spark of innovation spirit for the younger generation to create industries that support a sustainable national economy, socially just, and respectful of human values,” Andi concluded.
