The Government has emphasized that the target of achieving 8 percent national economic growth by 2029 must go hand in hand with its commitment to reducing carbon emissions. This was conveyed by the Special Envoy of the President for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, in his statement in Jakarta.
Hashim stressed that accelerating economic growth will automatically increase carbon emissions, thus requiring a clear strategy to ensure development does not burden the environment. “Achieving the economic growth target of 8 percent by 2029 will certainly result in higher carbon emissions. Therefore, we need serious efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Economic growth must go hand in hand with our commitment to reducing carbon emissions, not the other way around,” he said.
According to him, Indonesia has a significant opportunity to prove that green economic development can become a driver of growth. By integrating clean energy investment, industrial efficiency, and low-carbon technology, Hashim is optimistic that the target can be achieved.

In agreement, the Minister of Industry highlighted the importance of synergy between economic growth strategies and environmental policies. “We agree with Mr. Hashim that economic growth must not be placed in opposition to efforts to reduce carbon or greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial sector. On the contrary, both must proceed in tandem,” he said.
The Minister explained that the industrial sector is one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions in the country. “Industry contributes around 30 percent of total CO2 emissions in Indonesia. Therefore, efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial sector are not only crucial for environmental sustainability but will also support the achievement of the 8 percent economic growth target in 2029,” he stated.
The Minister further noted that domestic manufacturing industries are now at a critical point in facing growing global demands, particularly regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the transition toward clean energy. Accelerating green industry transformation has become an urgent necessity to safeguard national competitiveness amid the global green economy trend.
“We have always stated that the effort to carry out green industry transformation must not be seen as a cost, but as an investment. Therefore, the state must play its role, because this effort aligns with the Asta Cita vision of the President,” said Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita at The 2nd Annual Indonesia Green Industry Summit (AIGIS) 2025 in Jakarta, Wednesday (20/8).
The Minister elaborated that green industry transformation corresponds with Asta Cita’s second pillar: strengthening national defense and promoting self-reliance through food, energy, and water security, creative economy, green economy, and blue economy. Furthermore, it aligns with the third pillar: improving the quality of employment, since green industry transformation can drive the creation of green jobs.
In addition, it reflects the fifth Asta Cita pillar, which is continuing downstreaming and industrialization to increase domestic value-add, as well as the eighth pillar on harmonizing life with nature and the environment. “This is where the relevance of the circular economy becomes even stronger, and we will implement it,” he said.
On this occasion, the Minister also conveyed that this year’s AIGIS was successfully organized under three key principles: Zero Emission, Zero Waste, and Zero State Budget (APBN). “This event was made possible through the collaboration of BSKJI of the Ministry of Industry, WRI, IESR, and PT. Global Mahaka Solusindo, with full support from main sponsors Toyota and Jaecoo. AIGIS this year also received support from CarbonEthics, IDXCarbon, ZonaEBT, and WasteHub,” he noted.
AIGIS also served as a platform for presenting the Green Industry Awards to industrial players, certification bodies, auditors, and local governments committed to sustainability. This year, awards were presented in five categories: (1) Best Performance in Green Industry Implementation, (2) Transformation Towards Green Industry, (3) Best Green Industry Certification Body (LSIH), (4) Best Green Industry Auditor, and (5) Best Local Government for Green Industry Implementation. Through these awards, the Ministry of Industry hopes more stakeholders will be motivated to innovate, enhance energy efficiency, and become role models in applying green industry principles in Indonesia.
The Minister called on all industrial players to view the decarbonization agenda as an opportunity, not a burden. “The transformation toward a green industry is a long journey that requires vision, innovation, and collaboration. With steps such as energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, CCU technology, and circular economy implementation, Indonesia will not only maintain its global competitiveness but also contribute to environmental sustainability,” he emphasized.
